Camping

Heavens to Betsy, I am so behind in updating this blog.  Just been busy.  It was a good summer.  We took our first (and second) camping trips with Jack.  In August we went to Hendy Woods, a little south of Mendocino. We went with some friends who have a 1-year-old, and he and Jack had lots of fun running in and out of the tents.

We went on a couple of nice hikes and cooked up good camp food.  Jack had a great time, except for the sleeping-in-the-tent thing.  He had a Thermarest and a sleeping bag, and was delighted that he could get up and wander around the tent at will.  He fell asleep very late, and woke up a lot during the night.  He was happy but just wanted to wander around and play.

Our second trip was in September, and we went with some different friends to Portola Redwoods State Park, only about an hour from our house.  It’s not that far but if feels like you’re in a different world.  We cooked up “hobo stew” for dinner:  individual foil packets filled with veggies, spices and meat (or soy crumbles in my case) that were cooked on the coals of the fire.  Super tasty.  We also had s’mores.  We went on a couple of very nice hikes and Jack enjoyed looking for bluejays.

The sleeping was a bit problematic again.  This time Jack kept whimpering and moaning in his sleep and needed a lot of comforting.  No idea what was wrong.   Also there was a baby at another campsite that was crying a lot and around 1 AM that family got up and packed up the car and left!  So there was very little sleeping overall.

Despite that we had a great time.  I loved sitting around the campsite, and hiking through the redwoods.  Chris was excited to use his new camp stove.  That may be our last trip of the season, but I’m sure we’ll go lots more next year.
