Sniffles

September 23, 2008

Jack has come down with his first cold.  So far it hasn’t been too bad; a runny nose and some coughing.  It did make his sleep last night pretty rough.  I’m actually pretty happy we made it to 5.5 months before he got sick, especially since we have taken him out and about a lot this whole time.

I think he got it from Chris, but Chris denies having a cold.  Admittedly, Chris very rarely is sick; he’s never taken a sick day except for two days when he had his wisdom teeth out.  When I ask Chris why he’s coughing, he says he has something in his throat.  Hmmm.  Anyway, I’ll be amazed if I don’t get it.

I enjoyed our music class last Friday, and I think Jack did too.  We sat in a circle on the floor and sang songs and played instruments.  You definitely can’t be self-conscious in a class like that; the teacher just launches into things like the “Hello” song (where you sing hello to every baby in the circle) and you gotta just jump in.

Oh, the Irony

September 18, 2008

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Jack had relatively short (45 minutes) morning naps.  I dutifully lay down during each of those, hoping to get some sleep myself, but I didn’t get much.  I have a terrible time falling asleep for naps and it just isn’t enough time for me to get any real sleep.

This morning I planned to go to my mother’s group, which meets at 10.  Of course this morning is when Jack decided to take a long nap!  I lay down for a while but heard him stirring after an hour, so I got up and got dressed and went into his room:  and he was asleep again!  I ended up being 45 minutes late, but it didn’t matter, because no one had shown up.  Boo.  I am really craving some social interaction so that was a bummer.  I was supposed to have a lunch date on Tuesday but that was canceled.

I did get to see Tonja while I was there, our fabulous lactation consultant who helped us through those initial dark days of breastfeeding.  It’s amazing to me that in a few weeks Jack will be having his first solid food.  Time is really starting to speed up.

Tomorrow I’m going to our first music class.. I hope someone shows up for that at least!

It’s Gonna Be A Long Day…

September 15, 2008

Let’s see.. Jack woke up at 3:30 last night, I fed him, then he woke up again at 5:30 and wouldn’t go back to sleep for love nor money.  It’s noon and so far he has had one 45 minute nap.

Five Months

First Dinner Out

First Dinner Out

Jack is five months old today.  He has two teeth coming in (the bottom front two).  I can feel them poking up through the gum.

This morning I was making him laugh by first putting on a very serious face and then suddenly laughing.  It cracked him up.

Sleeping has been variable.  Some days he naps well, and other days… not so much.  Yesterday he took four cat naps (30 minutes or less), two of which were in the car.  A few days ago he had a 2.5 hour nap.  So you never know.  Lately he’s been having a bit of trouble at the beginning of the night; he’ll go to sleep ok, but wake up frequently.  Usually just a little soothing will get him back to sleep but sometimes we have to pull out the big guns:  Chris takes him in to our room and lies down with him on our bed til he’s calm enough to go back in the crib.

His passport arrived in the mail today.  The picture is pretty funny:  he is looking at the camera with his mouth wide open in surprise.

Last Saturday we went out to dinner with him for the first time!  That was a lot of fun.

Next week, we’re starting a music class.

Yesterday I took a video of him practicing his sitting.

Milestones

Jack, sleeping at my parents' house

Jack, sleeping at my parents

The last time I spent the night away from home with Jack, at my parents’, sleeping didn’t go so well.  That was a month and a half ago, and last week I decided to try again.  It was another heat wave and we escaped to the relief of the A/C at my parents’.  (It was 106 there.)

Success!  Jack slept from 8 PM to 7 AM and woke up twice to eat.  I’m so happy about it.  Now we can go on trips!  He even napped in there a few times.

Other milestones, for me and for Jack:

  • He can not only reach the bunny hanging above his baby papasan, today he pulled it clean off.  I didn’t even realize it detached…
  • I stopped taking Fenugreek.  Now I’m down to three pills a day:  Synthroid (which my doctor recommended I continue through breastfeeding); a vitamin; and fish oil.  I’m not sure how long I’m going to keep up the fish oil; my doctor recommended it as well for breastfeeding, but I don’t think there is solid evidence it helps.  This is down from my high of 18 pills day.. ugh.  That was in the first month:  8 Fenugreek, 4 antiobiotic pills per day for an infection, the three listed above, an iron supplement, a probiotic and another pill for a yeast infection.. and 3 cups of nursing tea.  Man, for someone who doesn’t even have Tylenol in the house normally, that is a lot of fricking meds.  And I’m glad it’s over.
  • I got my period again, after 4.5 months.  I was hoping it’d be longer, I know some women don’t get it the whole time they’re breastfeeding, but oh well.  When I first saw the blood I panicked.  For the 2.5 years prior to getting pregnant, seeing that first bit of blood every month was crushing.  While I was pregnant, I had some spotting, which was scary (turned out to be nothing serious).  Then I remembered, oh yeah, it must be my period.. no big deal!
  • He’s started to laugh.  I love that sound.
  • He can read.
  • Ok, that last one isn’t true.

Lots of milestones still to come.   Today I was giving him a bath and marveling that he now sits up in the bathtub and splashes and looks around, instead of lying in the bath sling and being very passive like he was in the beginning.  Soon enough I suppose he’ll be sitting up on his own… and then.. crawling… eek!
