Of Slings and Strollers

By cpearl

Right now we’ve got three baby carriers:  a Moby wrap, a sling, and a Bjorn.  I use the Moby and sling quite a bit, and Chris prefers the Bjorn.

The sling is great for going to the store, during dinner and around the house.  It’s easy to put on and easy to put Jack into.  He’s usually pretty happy in it.  It was great when I picked Chris’s parents up at the airport; he was tucked in close to me and I didn’t have to navigate the stroller through the crowds.  It is not as snug as the Moby however so I have to be more careful and often use one hand to make sure he’s secure.   When he’s covered up and I’m in a public place people often don’t realize there’s a baby in there.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Moby.  When it works, it’s awesome, but even after two months I have a hard time putting it on just right.   I’ve worn it a couple of times recently on walks on the trail near our house and it’s great to able to go places I can’t take the stroller.  He gets quite a snug hold and I can definitely use both hands.  He usually goes to sleep if we go for a walk.  The beauty of the Moby of course is that there are multiple ways you can use it, and hopefully I’ll get a lot more use from the other holds when he’s a bit older.  But it can be SO frustrating to get it on correctly.  It’s like 18 feet of fabric.  I have yet to brave wearing it if I’m not able to put it on while I’m at home.

I have started using the stroller a bit more recently.  It really hasn’t seen much use.  Pros:  you can store other stuff in it; it’s easy to put Jack into; I can see his face easily.  Cons:  can only go on hard surfaces; Jack is further away from me; takes up space in the car; it makes you bring stuff you don’t really need.  I mean I don’t really need to carry a diaper bag on a one hour walk.

I didn’t think I’d need different baby carriers, but I am definitely using them in different situations.
